There are people born into this world that have a purpose. They were meant to do something, and know it for their whole lives. It’s more than loving what you do. It is being what you do. Actress and model Hunter Phoenix is one of those lucky few. Born and raised in Toronto, Canada, she has known what she wanted to do at the age of six.
“From the very first school play I wanted to be on stage all the time,” she said. “In the first grade we did the play The Three Bears. I memorized everyone’s lines to make sure I had a part.” It was then that Phoenix realized her knack for memorizing large amounts of text. “When other kids would shy away from it, I would go ahead and memorize what had to be done,” she explained. “Then I would ask for the part.”
Although petite in stature, Phoenix carries a larger-than-life persona when she steps into the room. Phenomenally vibrant and immensely talented, the Canadian-born beauty exudes ambition that has gained her an impressive resume and roster of professional achievements.
“When I was a little girl I always wanted to be a model; but I was never very tall – I really didn’t think I had a chance since most famous models are 5’9 or more.” Phoenix said. “I was studying theater in school, and working in a bar to pay off my student loan when a casting director for a beer commercial came in and asked the owner if he ‘could recommend any beautiful girls for the spot.’ He suggested me. I went out on my first modeling audition, kind of by accident. I was up against 400 other girls, and I got the job—I thought ‘hey this is easy!’ And that was how I became a ‘Bud Girl,’ I did several posters and even live appearances. The Budweiser thing was a long term project, and it was a sweet gig!”
A potent combination of warm personal charm and a figure of rare, profoundly appealing symmetry, Phoenix’s launch in the business steadily built momentum. With over fifteen years of experience, Phoenix remains an in-demand, versatile force in the industry, working up close as a model, appearing in print ads, acting in television spots and even voicing commercials.
Hunter’s love for the theatre brought her to study with legendary acting coach Uta Hagen: a process that transformed her approach to the craft and led her to such roles on stage as Blanche in Streetcar Named Desire, Alyss in Sex Tips for Modern Girls and as Karen in David Mamet’s iconic Hollywood satire, Speed The Plow.
Recently cast in the feature film The Bandit Hound II with Lou Ferrigno, Paul Sorvino and Catherine Bell, Hunter has also appeared onscreen in Mutant X, Doc, Singles Court, PSI Factor, and has hosted for HGTV. In 2017 Phoenix co-stared in the feature film The Master of Pulpits as well as two short films, Beyond Approval and The Perfect Family which was featured in 6 film festivals including the Belize International Film Festival after premiering at the Screamfest Horror Film Festival in Hollywood, CA.
Phoenix understands the complexities of acting, and says it has been a catalyst for personal growth in her life. “I love exploring human behavior and the human psyche to create really detailed and fully developed characters; studying the nuances of relationships and friendships. I have so much fun ‘playing’ with other actors, living out alternate realities without real world consequences.”
In addition to her creative work, Hunter also pursued a degree in psychology that took her deeply into the areas self-help and personal growth. Profoundly impacted by the work and the “incredible metamorphosis” in her own life Phoenix became inspired to share the transformational processes with others leading more than 100 workshops and has more than 150 published articles in publications such as The Globe and Mail, Fox Business, Women’s Day and Shape.
What’s next for the multi-talented Ms. Phoenix? “In spiritual circles there is a belief that ‘we are always growing or dying’ – don’t believe me, just look at a tree. So for me it’s growth of course, whatever that means! As long as my world keeps expanding and I can share that and create experiences that are deeply personal, transformative and entertaining for others.”
